But as time went on and parts of the scripts were scrapped, Gaiman deicide to write them back in to the novel. Neil Gaiman was actually asked to write a TV programmes for the BBC and that is where the story came from. I also like the story behind how this novel came into being. Unless they have no imagination, in which case they will hate this book.

Simply put, I love this book and it’s one that I think that most people will enjoy for one reason or another. The little hints of humour make it believable, even as Richard runs around beneath London, conversing with angels, battling beasts and attending Floating Markets. There is humour in the literal interpretation of the station names on the London underground, there are shepherds in Shepherd’s Bush, there are friars at Blackfriars and there is an Earl at Earl’s Court. It seems like Neil Gaiman just let his inner child run around with this one. The whole cast of characters is so interesting and I love the really rather childish view of London Below. It’s the story of Richard and Door trying to figure out who they are and where they belong. It’s the story of Lady Door, who is trying to stay alive after the whole of her family has been murdered. It’s the story of Richard Mayhew (or is it Maybury?) and what happens when he falls through the cracks in reality into London Below.

Neverwhere is actually one of my favourite books. That’s not to say that his books don’t deserve them though! I think I owe a lot to him in terms of my own writing style, so, you know, I owe him five star reviews. I love his imagination and the description that leaves just a little up to the reader, and I love his really rather English sense of humour. I’ve reviewed books by Neil Gaiman before, and I don’t think I would give any of his books less than five stars because, to put it simply, I love him.
